Jennifer Grey and Producers Plan ’90s-Set Sequel Honoring Patrick Swayze

Producers developing a follow-up to the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing are working alongside star Jennifer Grey to construct a new story set in the 1990s, with production company Color Force boarding the Lionsgate project earlier this year. Speaking at IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking 2026 Summit in Los Angeles on October 17, 2026, producer Nina Jacobson stated that the upcoming film will feature a new young cast while bringing Grey back as Frances “Baby” Houseman. Jacobson also addressed the legacy of co-lead star Patrick Swayze, who died in 2009 of pancreatic cancer, assuring audiences that the production team intends to honor the late actor without utilizing artificial intelligence to recreate him.

Color Force Shapes a New Romance While Chasing Original Grit

Jacobson explained during her conversation with IndieWire editor-in-chief Brent Lang that the creative team is deliberately targeting the raw, risk-taking feel that defined the original picture. Recalling her initial viewing of the 1987 film, Jacobson noted that elements like its abortion subplot would face heavy scrutiny in modern romantic cinema. Color Force, which also produces FX’s Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette and Lionsgate’s upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, aims to capture that same emotional resonance.

Grey has incredible insights into why she thinks it has lasted so much or what it is about her character that spoke so much to people and still does, Jacobson said during the Los Angeles panel. We were trying to chase the feeling of that original movie. … Being able to tell a young love story that could take some of those risks but also inspire those feelings felt like an incredible chance for us.

Honoring Patrick Swayze Without Digital Reconstructions

Addressing the absence of Swayze, who portrayed dance instructor Johnny Castle, Jacobson emphasized the importance of acknowledging fan attachment to the actor. She confirmed the project’s stance on digital effects by stating, That’s one of the things that you really have to focus on: how to let people mourn him in a movie, before adding explicitly, And don’t worry, we won’t be bringing him back with AI.

While the project continues development at Lionsgate following its announcement, exact casting details for the younger ensemble and a targeted release date remain unannounced.
