Discovery Center Manager Position Open in Fawnskin, California
The Southern California Mountains Foundation (SCMF) is seeking a full-time Discovery Center Manager to oversee operations at the Big Bear Discovery Center in Fawnskin, California. This role, in partnership with the Forest Service, focuses on strengthening public programs and fostering community support for the San Bernardino National Forest.

About the Big Bear Discovery Center
Opened in 1998, the Big Bear Discovery Center is the largest visitor center in the Big Bear Valley, welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually. It provides interpretive programs and educational information about the San Bernardino National Forest. The center also hosts special events, including concerts and theatrical performances .
Job Responsibilities
The Discovery Center Manager is responsible for the overall management of the center, including staffing, program development, volunteer coordination, and fundraising. Key duties include:
- Overseeing daily operations in partnership with Forest Service staff.
- Ensuring adequate staffing for the visitor center and educational programs.
- Training and supervising staff, interns, and volunteers.
- Managing interpretive displays and ensuring educational accuracy.
- Recruiting, training, and managing volunteers.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with community organizations.
- Participating in fundraising efforts and event planning.
- Developing and maintaining an annual calendar of events.
- Managing gift store operations, including inventory and sales.
- Maintaining accurate records of program participation and accomplishments.
- Coordinating facility management.
- Leading volunteer advisory council activities.
- Collaborating with other SCMF volunteer programs.
- Identifying community outreach opportunities.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A passion for outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship.
- Knowledge of the Big Bear Valley and San Bernardino Mountains is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary range of $70,000 – $75,000 annually. The work schedule is primarily Thursday through Monday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with some evening and weekend hours required.
