Disney’s Box Office: Highs and Lows

Disney is navigating a turbulent box office landscape. The animated sequel “Zootopia 2” reclaimed the No. 1 spot in North America during its third weekend, surpassing a remarkable $1 billion worldwide. However, the political dramedy “Ella McCay” experienced a disastrous debut, earning only $2.1 million domestically – one of the worst openings in recent Disney history.

“Ella McCay” had a modest $35 million production budget, considerably less than Disney’s typical blockbusters. Most of the studio’s major releases – including Marvel, Avatar, and family films like “Inside Out 2” and “Lilo & Stitch” – routinely exceed $200 million in production costs. While “Ella McCay” isn’t facing catastrophic losses, its performance is a stark contrast to “Zootopia 2’s” success.
