Nottingham-based indie band Do Nothing will release their second studio album, Friend World, on November 6 via Submarine Cat Records. Following their 2023 debut Snake Sideways, the band has introduced the new project with the lead single “Stars,” a track that trades traditional guitar-heavy arrangements for drum machine loops and synthesizer textures.
The Evolution of the Do Nothing Sound
Frontman Chris Bailey confirmed the band’s shift in production approach for the upcoming record. According to an official statement from the band, the group prioritized finding momentum through unconventional rhythmic patterns rather than leaning on aggressive guitar work. The album was recorded at JT Soar in Nottingham and produced by Louis Milburn, a member of the experimental group Folly Group.

Bailey noted that the creative process for Friend World felt less constrained than the sessions for their debut. While Snake Sideways was shaped by the band’s desire to navigate listener expectations, the writing for this record focused on pursuing immediate, exciting musical ideas without external pressure.
The Meaning Behind “Stars”
The lead single “Stars” examines the hollow nature of fame and the search for genuine human connection. In a press release, Bailey explained that the lyrics address the disconnect often found in high-profile lives, suggesting that ambition does not always equate to personal fulfillment.
The song’s title and the album’s name draw inspiration from disparate sources: the writings of novelist Elizabeth Smart and the performances of comedian Andy Kaufman. Kaufman famously concluded his stage shows by singing the song “This Friendly World,” a performance Bailey found unsettlingly sarcastic. By adopting the title, the band explores the tension between surface-level positivity and the darker, more complex realities of life.

Friend World features 11 tracks that mark the band’s continued exploration of leftfield indie-pop. The full tracklist is as follows:

Contextualizing the Band’s Growth
The release of Friend World follows a period of critical assessment for the group. In 2023, NME reviewed Snake Sideways, awarding it three stars while observing that the band’s early, high-energy promise had transitioned into a more polished, "smoothed over" sound. With the release of Friend World, the band aims to demonstrate a clearer artistic identity. Bailey described the new project as a collection of songs about "bleak things" that nonetheless manages to feel optimistic, emphasizing his belief that the existence of negativity is necessary to define the positive.
