Doctors Find Simple Way to Control PSA and Prostate Cancer

A daily combination of concentrated plant foods and specific probiotic bacteria has cut the rate of PSA rise by nearly threefold in men with low-risk prostate cancer.

The finding positions targeted nutrition as a measurable force in slowing a disease marker that often drives decisions toward surgery or radiation.

PSA levels and prostate cancer

Inside a community hospital setting, men on active surveillance showed striking changes in their blood markers over just four months.

Tracking those shifts, Dr. Robert J. Thomas, a clinical oncologist at Bedford Hospital, documented that adding probiotic bacteria to the plant-based capsules reversed PSA momentum instead of merely slowing it.

Rather than continuing its steady climb, PSA levels in the combined group fell while levels in the comparison group edged upward more slowly.

Because PSA trends often influence whether patients abandon surveillance for treatment, that divergence carries immediate clinical weight and sets up the biological explanation that follows.

Two capsule routine

Twice a day for four months, every participant took a plant-food capsule blend and stopped other over-the-counter supplements.

Each dose packed concentrates and extracts from six foods, chosen for lab and population clues about prostate health.

Half the men also swallowed probiotics, live microbes meant to aid gut balance, while the rest took a look-alike placebo, an inactive capsule with no live bacteria.

That placebo control kept expectations even, since neither the men nor their clinicians knew who received the real bacteria capsule and who received the inactive one.

PSA slowed most

Blood tests from the randomized trial tracked prostate-specific antigen, a prostate protein that can rise with cancer, across three checkups.

Clinicians follow PSA with a simple blood test, and the probiotic group saw the number drop instead of climb.

With probiotics added, the pace of PSA rise dropped sharply, creating a gap between groups that was roughly three times larger than with the plant capsules alone.

Even so, PSA can rise from noncancer prostate growth or inflammation, so longer follow-up and tissue checks still matter.

Scans echoed PSA changes

Imaging reports added another check through magnetic resonance imaging, a scan that maps prostate tissue in detail, during follow-up.

Radiologists often called it MRI, and they labeled each MRI as stable, shrinking, or growing in the prostate.

Follow-up scans told a similar story, as far fewer men in the probiotic group showed signs of growth on MRI, and those scan changes tended to track with shifts in PSA.

Because MRI still cannot confirm what cells are doing, the scan link supports the signal but leaves the deepest proof unresolved.

Urinary symptoms eased

Daily life changed in ways men could feel, with urinary symptoms easing during the same months the blood marker improved.

Less swelling in the prostate can ease urgency and weak stream, and the supplements may have cooled inflammation in that tissue.

Beyond lab numbers, many participants reported easier urination and modest gains in sexual function, improvements that appeared across both groups during the four-month stretch.

Since both arms improved similarly, the probiotic did not add extra symptom relief beyond the plant capsule during this short trial.

Inflammation signals fell

Blood tests suggested that overall body inflammation eased during the trial, and the clearest shift appeared in men taking the added probiotics.

Clinicians followed a simple measure drawn from routine blood work that reflects how the immune system is reacting inside the body.

Men on the placebo saw that inflammation signal creep upward, while those on probiotics showed a drop over the same period.

Because that measure offers only a broad snapshot, longer studies will need more detailed testing to confirm exactly how the immune response is changing.

Why gut microbes matter

Growing evidence has tied gut bacteria to prostate cancer biology, pointing to inflammation as one pathway linking the gut and the prostate.

Diet can reshape the microbiome, the community of microbes in your gut, and that community can change what enters the bloodstream.

Probiotic bacteria can help break plant compounds into smaller pieces, and plant fibers can feed those bacteria and steady gut barriers.

Even with shared supplements, gut bacteria differ between people, so doctors will need clues that predict who responds best.

What the trial missed

A short follow-up captured early changes, but prostate cancer can move slowly, and small swings can fade over time.

Without routine repeat biopsy, removing prostate tissue to examine under a microscope, the team relied on PSA and MRI as stand-ins.

Limited diversity also mattered, since 97% of participants were white, and results may differ in other communities.

Missing a probiotic-only group, the trial cannot separate bacteria effects from plant capsules, and it tested only one formulation.

What this could mean

For men on active surveillance, closely watching cancer and treating only if it grows. Rising PSA can push men into surgery or radiation, and nearly 50% leave AS within five years.

“If confirmed with further follow-up, these dietary interventions, alongside other lifestyle manoeuvres, could reassure men to remain on AS, and hence avoid the risks of radiotherapy, hormones, or surgery,” wrote Dr. Thomas.

Until longer follow-up arrives, men should treat these capsules as one tested option and discuss them with their clinician.

Evidence across blood tests, MRI scans, and symptoms suggests that gut-focused nutrition may slow low-risk prostate cancer signals for some men.

Follow-up studies now need longer timelines, more diverse participants, and clear food-based plans to learn who benefits and why.The study is published in European Urology Oncology.
