Averaging 30.9 years old when weighted by at-bats and games played according to Baseball Reference, the team just finished a 100-win regular season and holds the second-best odds to win the World Series at 16.7% as tracked by Baseball Prospectus.
Roster Age and Regular Season Performance
The Dodgers’ lineup features several everyday veterans well into their mid-to-late 30s. Star corner infielders Freddie Freeman and Max Muncy are 37 and 36 years old, respectively, while two-way player Shohei Ohtani turned 32 in July. Shortstop Mookie Betts will turn 34 next month. Manager Dave Roberts acknowledged the demographic reality of the clubhouse during a recent interview, noting that experience accompanies the advanced average age of the roster.
“That’s a fact, we’re an older team,” Roberts said. “With age, there’s experience. I know we’re not going to fall off a cliff, our team.”
Veteran infielder Miguel Rojas, 37, emphasized that the club relies on a distinct formula compared to younger franchises. “We’re not going to win games the same way that Milwaukee or Tampa Bay or these younger teams are winning games,” Rojas said. “We’re going to win games a different way. We’re going to win games with a lot of talent, with experience, and winning moments.”
Managing Injuries Across the Roster
The advanced age of key contributors coincided with several notable injuries during the season. Shohei Ohtani spent time on the injured list after managing issues with his left knee and right biceps. Freddie Freeman played through knee tendinitis in September, while Teoscar Hernández missed time with a left hamstring strain and Mookie Betts served a monthlong injured list stint for a right oblique strain.
Younger players also faced physical setbacks down the stretch. Catcher Dalton Rushing, 25, spent consecutive stints on the injured list due to a flexor strain in his forearm. Despite these absences, the team maintained depth to secure the second-best regular-season record in the majors.
“As I’ve gotten older, I’m definitely taking a lot more care of my body,” Betts said. “I know I had an oblique earlier, but as far as just showing up every day and whatnot, I feel like we do a good job in taking care of our bodies and staying healthy for the most part.”
Youth Integration and Farm System Strength
Even with a payroll known to be among the highest in baseball, the organization maintains a top-tier farm system. Following a trade deadline deal that sent outfielder prospect Zyhir Hope and right-hander River Ryan to the Detroit Tigers for left-hander Tarik Skubal, the Dodgers’ farm system still ranked No. 1 on MLB Pipeline.
Roster depth was highlighted when rookie Josue De Paula debuted directly from Double-A. When De Paula joined the lineup two weeks prior, he was the youngest player by four years. Late in a recent game, when Rojas pinch-hit for Alex Freeland, De Paula at 21 and Kyle Tucker at 29 were the only players under 30 remaining in the batting order.
“You’ve got to have both,” Betts said regarding the blend of veterans and prospects. “You need experience, but you also do need youth. I don’t know what the balance is, to be honest.”
Postseason Outlook and Continuity
The Dodgers are aiming to become the first National League team to claim three straight championships, joining select historical company in terms of sustained postseason appearances. Roster continuity supports this push, with 17 players on the projected postseason roster having contributed to each of the franchise’s last two World Series titles.
President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman pointed to veteran familiarity as a critical asset heading into October play. “The experience, how smart these guys are on the field, I think those things help win moments and win battles on the edges in October,” Friedman said when the club clinched the National League West title. "It’s not as easy to get through a 162-game season with an older roster. But I do think that experience in those moments will definitely help and we’ll see it shine through at different points in October.”
