Trump Announces ‘Productive’ Iran Talks, Dollar Weakens Amid Easing Tensions
Latest YORK, March 23, 2026 – The dollar fell against major currencies on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced “productive” talks between the U.S. And Iran, leading to a delay in planned military strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure. This development eased immediate concerns about further supply shocks and provided a slight boost to risk assets.
Trump Orders Delay of Military Strikes
President Trump stated he had instructed the Department of Defense to postpone “any and all” military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days . This announcement came just hours before a previously set deadline for Tehran to “fully open” the Strait of Hormuz, a demand accompanied by threats to destroy Iranian power plants if unmet .
Iran Denies Negotiations
Despite Trump’s claims of productive talks, Iran’s foreign ministry denied any negotiations were taking place, reiterating that the country’s conditions for ending the conflict remained unchanged .
Market Reaction: Dollar Weakens, Oil Prices Fall
The market reacted to Trump’s announcement with a weakening of the dollar. The euro rose 0.4 percent to $1.1616, reaching its highest point since March 11. The dollar too weakened against the yen, falling 0.6 percent to 158.30 yen, slightly retreating from the 160 yen level that had alerted traders to potential intervention from the Bank of Japan. Sterling rose 0.71 percent to $1.3436, hitting its highest level since March 10.
The dollar index, which measures the U.S. Currency against a basket of peers, was down 0.4 percent at 99.08. The index had previously experienced its first weekly decline since the start of the war on Friday, attributed to the inflationary effects of surging oil prices and a shift towards a more hawkish stance by central banks.
Global stock and energy markets also saw a sharp recovery following Trump’s comments. U.S. Treasury yields also retreated from multi-month highs.
Diplomatic Efforts and Potential Intermediaries
According to a reporter for Axios, Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan had met with Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and separately with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi . Iran’s foreign ministry acknowledged “initiatives” to reduce tensions, as reported by the Mehr News Agency.
Oil Prices Decline
The price of Brent crude oil fell around 12 percent to $98.65 a barrel, after earlier dropping to $96.
Uncertainty Remains
Elias Haddad, global head of markets strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman in London, cautioned that it was too early to determine whether peak fear or de-escalation had been reached in the Iran conflict . However, he noted that the market was beginning to anticipate a more encouraging outlook, even as also warning of the potential for an energy shock to morph into a fiscal shock.
