Global foreign exchange markets traded within tight parameters on Thursday as investors braced for the Jackson Hole economic symposium, while currency traders parsed shifting monetary policy signals from Tokyo and Seoul, according to Reuters.

US Dollar Holds Steady Ahead of Jackson Hole Symposium

The U.S. dollar index remained anchored at 99.12, according to data cited by Reuters, holding flat after paring earlier gains from an eight-day high. Currency movement remained subdued as markets awaited key central bank commentary from the annual economic gathering in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Commerce Department showed the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index increased by 3.7% over the 12 months through July. This figure matched the annual rate recorded in June while coming in slightly above the 3.6% consensus estimate compiled by Reuters. On a monthly basis, the PCE index rose 0.2%, rebounding from a 0.1% decline in June and topping expectations for a 0.1% gain. Westpac economist Ryan Wells noted in a research client note reported by Reuters that the inflation print kept expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike before the end of the year alive, though Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s address at the symposium would serve as “the ultimate test.”

Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Addresses Inflation Risks

The Japanese yen held largely steady at 159.29 per dollar, showing minimal reaction to comments from Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino, according to Reuters. Himino stated that implementing timely interest rate hikes would help avert an inflationary surge that might otherwise force abrupt policy tightening later. However, Himino refrained from using explicit phrasing similar to guidance issued prior to the central bank’s January 2025 meeting, leaving market participants without a definitive timeline for a potential move. Money market pricing tracked by broker Totan Tanshi indicated an 86% probability of a Bank of Japan rate increase at the policy meeting scheduled for September 17 and 18. Sho Suzuki, a market analyst at Matsui Securities, told Reuters that Himino’s explicit acknowledgment of upside price risks signaled a stance that was not particularly dovish. Suzuki cautioned, however, that the absence of a clear forward signal leaves the yen vulnerable to renewed downward pressure, while noting that additional board member appearances ahead of the September meeting could offer further clarity.

International Currency Movements and Central Bank Actions

Major currencies registered minor fluctuations against the greenback on Thursday alongside regional central bank maneuvers. The euro edged up 0.07% to $1.1657, while the British pound traded at $1.3592, and the Australian dollar advanced 0.22% to $0.7183, as reported by Reuters. In South Korea, the central bank executed its second rate increase, raising its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 3.00%. Following the Bank of Korea’s decision, the South Korean won appreciated 0.48% against the dollar to trade at 1,378.7. Meanwhile, the Canadian dollar held flat at C$1.388 per dollar following remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, who stated it was “time to teach Canada you can’t do this anymore” in the wake of collapsed bilateral trade negotiations. In cryptocurrency markets, bitcoin gained 0.55% to reach $78,872.51, and ether climbed 1.22% to $2,502.15.
