Funding Shortfall Threatens Tallaght Program

The Dublin 24 literacy program relies on local fundraising and partnerships to remain operational. According to CDI, the organization must secure 12 corporate sponsors over a three-year period to stabilize its finances. Each sponsor is asked to cover one month of book costs annually to protect the initiative for local families.

As the local charity partner, CDI funds the wholesale cost price of the books, while also employing dedicated staff to manage local administration. The Dollywood Foundation maintains the overarching program infrastructure and book ordering systems, and An Post handles nationwide home deliveries at no charge to participating families.

How the Imagination Library Operates in Ireland

Launched in Tallaght on Valentine’s Day in 2019, the Republic of Ireland became the fifth country to adopt Dolly Parton’s book gifting scheme. Registered children receive books mailed directly to their homes in their own names from birth until their fifth birthday, helping foster early literacy habits.

The Gold Medal Book Selection Committee curates titles to match developmental milestones. Children receive “TiN” by Chris Judge as their official welcome book, which includes a personal message from Dolly Parton. Upon graduating at age five, participants receive Oscar Wilde’s “The Selfish Giant” accompanied by a congratulatory letter from the founder.

Community Impact and Logistics

Since inception, CDI has distributed more than 420,000 books across Dublin 24. According to Marian Quinn, postal workers at the Tallaght An Post depot take immense pride in ensuring deliveries reach families reliably each month. Despite this strong community backing, maintaining the program at its current scale requires substantial ongoing financial contributions to cover operational expenses.
