ISSO Handball Championship Expansion Brings 15 Schools to Mumbai
Introduced to the International Schools Sports Organisation calendar the previous year, the tournament returned for its second edition to feature competition across Under-14 and Under-17 categories for both boys and girls. The event took place in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, with reporting dated October 5. The tournament featured increased participation, intense competition, and spirited performances across the categories, further strengthening its place within the growing sporting programme of the International Schools Sports Organisation.
The host institution, Don Bosco International School, secured three of the four titles available during the competition, as reported by tribuneindia.com. The school claimed the championship trophies in the Under-14 Boys, Under-14 Girls, and Under-17 Boys divisions. VIBGYOR claimed the remaining title by winning the Under-17 Girls division, according to the same report. The host school, also referred to as DBIS, enjoyed a highly successful championship, while schools brought strong teams and athletes competed across age groups, showcasing the growing depth of school-level handball and the potential for the sport to become one of the prominent disciplines within the calendar.
Tournament Standings Across Divisions
For the Under-14 Girls division, Don Bosco International School captured the top spot, VIBGYOR finished as runners-up, and Amulakh placed third. Don Bosco International School maintained its performance in the Under-17 Boys competition by finishing ahead of VIBGYOR and CHIREC, according to latestly.com. In the Under-17 Girls tournament, VIBGYOR secured the championship, Don Bosco International School finished second, and Utpal placed third.
Organizers Note Growing Participation Levels
Abhishek Saraswat, Admin Head at the International Schools Sports Organisation, commented on the trajectory of the tournament following its conclusion. “It is encouraging to see Handball gaining greater participation and enthusiasm in its second year on the ISSO calendar,” Saraswat said, as reported across all syndicated feeds. “The response from schools and athletes reflects the growing interest in the sport, and we look forward to building on this momentum in the coming editions.”
