President Donald Trump returned to the Presidents Cup as honorary chairman, marking his fourth visit to a golf tournament of the year with a stop at Medinah Country Club in the Chicago suburbs. Trump’s appearance placed him on the first tee for the start of the 12 Sunday matches, continuing a tradition that pairs heads of state from host countries with the international team competition.
Trump Tournaments and the Presidents Cup Role
The role of honorary chairman is traditionally offered to leaders of the country hosting the tournament. The Presidents Cup was established in 1994 to showcase international players from non-European countries who are not eligible for the Ryder Cup, deriving its name from the inclusion of the host nation’s head of state.
Trump arrived at Medinah to witness the final day of competition, where the U.S. team faced a deficit, trailing for only the fourth time in the 32-year history of the event. Speaking to reporters Sunday morning outside the White House, Trump called the event one of the biggest in golf, noting that the sport features prominent team showcases like the Ryder Cup and the Presidents Cup.
The visit to Medinah follows a busy golf itinerary for Trump earlier in the year. In early May, he attended the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral near Miami. By August, he traveled to a LIV Golf event at Trump National Bedminster in New Jersey, followed by a trip earlier this month to the Irish Open at his course in Doonbeg, Ireland.
Historical Precedent of Presidential Attendance
Trump’s appearance at Medinah marks his second time attending the Presidents Cup. During his first term, he showed up at the conclusion of the 2017 tournament at Liberty National, posing with the U.S. players during the trophy presentation.
The 2017 event opened with a gathering of American political figures, when Trump sat alongside Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama on the first tee. Other leaders have also participated in the tradition over the decades. Bill Clinton attended for one round in 2000 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, while then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau participated in the trophy presentation at the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal.
