San Sebastián Completes Urban Improvements on Pío Baroja and Doctor Begiristain Avenues
The city of San Sebastián has finalized two urban improvement projects on Pío Baroja and Doctor Begiristain avenues, investing a combined 118,649.17 euros to enhance pedestrian accessibility and road safety, according to the Department of Maintenance and Urban Services. The works, which targeted deteriorated sidewalks and transit-heavy areas, aim to create a more inclusive and secure urban environment.
Details of the Pío Baroja Project
On Pío Baroja, 80 meters of damaged sidewalks were renovated between numbers 7 and 15, addressing issues caused by tree root damage. The project included constructing new spaces for tree growth, upgrading urban services, and installing an elevated pedestrian crossing. The intervention, costing 51,475 euros, prioritized pedestrian safety in a high-traffic zone frequented by residents, public transport users, and workers.
Doctor Begiristain Renovation
The Doctor Begiristain avenue project focused on a 200-meter stretch near the Hospital Universitario Donostia. A deteriorated pavement was replaced with a more durable, accessible solution, ensuring uninterrupted hospital access during construction. Additional upgrades included reinforced curbs, improved landscaping, and strengthened vehicle access points. The 67,174.17 euro investment emphasized resilience and integration with the surrounding environment.
Citywide Accessibility Goals
Iñigo García, the city’s delegate for Maintenance and Urban Services, stated, “Maintaining and improving our streets and sidewalks is a commitment to a more accessible, safe, and well-maintained city.” The municipality plans to replicate these efforts across other neighborhoods, as part of its broader program to enhance public spaces. “We aim to advance toward a city that is more accessible, safe, and welcoming for all residents,” García added.
