Doosan succeeded in escaping a losing streak by defeating Sangmu Phoenix thanks to Kang Jeon-gu’s explosive scoring power, Kim Yeon-bin’s stable attack support, and goalkeeper Kim Dong-wook‘s saves.
Doosan defeated Sangmu Phoenix 31-24 in the second match of the third round of the Shinhan SOL Bank 25-26 Handball H League Men’s Division held at SK Hawks Arena in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do at 7 p.m. on the 8th.
With this win, Doosan maintained 4th place with 4 wins, 1 draw, and 7 losses (9 points), while Sangmu Phoenix remained in 5th place with 2 wins, 2 draws, and 8 losses (6 points).
On this day, Doosan’s main guns stood out for their concentration. In goal, goalkeeper Kim Dong-wook recorded 10 saves and repeatedly blocked the opponent’s pursuit.
The early part of the game was tense and Sangmu Phoenix’s resistance was formidable. After 2-2, Sangmu sought an opportunity with Byun Seo-jun’s breakthrough and Oh Hyeong-seok’s outside shot, but a series of mistakes gave up the lead. Doosan took a 4-2 lead with consecutive scores from Lee Seong-min and Kim Yeon-bin, and Kim Yeon-bin widened the gap by scoring four goals in 10 minutes. Sangmu Phoenix chased after Kim Tae-hoon, scoring from the wing, but failed to keep the momentum going due to a series of missed shots.
In the middle of the game, Sangmu Phoenix launched a counterattack with goalkeeper Jin Yu-hwan making a save and Byun Seo-jun scoring. With Doosan running away to 10-5, Sangmu made a series of fast breaks and outside shots to chase up to 11-8, a 3-goal lead. However, Doosan widened the score gap again with goalkeeper Kim Dong-wook’s consecutive saves and Lee Han-sol and Lee Seong-min adding goals, ending the first half at 17-10.
Sangmu Phoenix’s pursuit continued in the second half. Byun Seo-jun succeeded in scoring consecutive goals to lift the mood, and Yoo Chan-min also contributed with fast breaks and breakthroughs, narrowing the gap to 20-15. Oh Hyeong-seok also tried to turn things around by consistently scoring from the side. However, Doosan broke the trend with Kang Jeon-gu and Kim Tae-woong scoring at key moments.
The turning point of the game was the numerical superiority situation. After Sangmu’s Kim Hyeon-woo was sent off with a red card, Doosan immediately scored in succession with Lee Jun-hee and Lee Han-sol to run away with a 25-19 lead. Afterwards, goalkeeper Kim Dong-wook’s save continued, and Doosan widened the gap to 30-22, or 8 goals, effectively dividing the game.
For Sangmu Phoenix, Byun Seo-jun and Yoo Chan-min scored until the last minute, but there was not enough time to turn the tide. In the end, Doosan won 31-24 with a stable game in offense and defense, breaking away from two consecutive losses.
Sangmu Phoenix fought hard with Byun Seo-jun scoring 6 goals and Oh Hyeong-seok and Yoo Chan-min scoring 4 goals each, but their defensive concentration left something to be desired.
Kang Jeon-gu, who was selected as MVP of the game, said, “This is my second game since returning from injury, and although I am not in perfect condition yet, I felt good after playing for the first time in a long time.” He added, “The young players worked hard leading the team, but now that they have returned, I will help my juniors and show them a different side of Doosan than before.”
