Magnus Cort Claims Stage 2 Victory at Volta a Catalunya as Dorian Godon Retains Lead

Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility) secured a sprint victory in stage 2 of the Volta a Catalunya, finishing the 167.4-kilometer route from Figueres to Banyoles. Despite Cort’s win, Dorian Godon (Ineos Grenadiers) successfully defended his overall race lead, maintaining the jersey thanks to his stage win on day one and a fourth-place finish on stage two.

Stage Recap

The stage saw an early breakaway attempt by Liam Slock and Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto-Intermarché), Julen Arriolabengoa (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Diego Uriarte (Equipo Kern Pharma), and Samuel Fernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi), establishing a lead of up to three minutes. However, the peloton, led by Ineos Grenadiers, controlled the race and gradually reeled in the breakaway.

Ineos Grenadiers worked diligently throughout the stage to support Godon, as well as general classification (GC) contenders Oscar Onley and Carlos Rodriguez, ensuring their safe positioning within the peloton. Victor Langellotti, Embret Svestad-Bardseng, and Bob Jungels also contributed significantly to the team’s efforts at the front of the race.

In the final kilometers, the peloton caught the last remaining attacker, Liam Slock, setting the stage for a sprint finish. Magnus Cort launched his sprint early and held off challenges from Noa Isidore and Francesco Busatto to take the stage win.

Overall Standings

Dorian Godon remains in the overall lead, with Magnus Cort now sitting in second place on the same time. Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) is third, trailing by 4 seconds, followed by Tom Pidcock (Great Britain) at 6 seconds.

Looking Ahead

Wednesday’s stage presents another opportunity for sprinters, while Thursday will feature a challenging summit finish at Vallter, expected to significantly impact the general classification.
