Libreng Sakay Program Deployed in Metro Manila Amidst Nationwide Transport Strike
Metro Manila residents have access to free bus rides on select routes today, March 19, 2026, as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) implements the “Libreng Sakay” program in response to a nationwide transport strike. The initiative, coordinated with the Office of the President, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), and the Philippine National Police (PNP), aims to mitigate the impact of the strike on commuters.
Free Ride Routes and Schedule
The Libreng Sakay buses are operating from 7:00 a.m. To 8:00 p.m. On the following routes:
- Quiapo to Welcome Rotonda
- Welcome Rotonda to Cubao
- Nagtahan to Cubao
- Taft-United Nations Avenue to PITX
- Lawton to PITX
Strike and Government Response
The transport strike is led by PISTON, protesting rising fuel prices and the government’s initial plan to increase fares. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Ordered the postponement of the planned fare hike to alleviate the burden on commuters as reported by Journal Daily News Online. Alongside the Libreng Sakay program, the President has also ordered mitigation programs including toll discounts and fuel subsidies for qualified drivers, and operators.
Program Objectives
The DOTr stated that the Libreng Sakay program is intended to ensure commuters have transportation options during the strike. According to the DOTr, the program is a direct response to President Marcos Jr.’s directive to ensure passenger mobility during the protest as detailed in PhilStar Life.
PISTON’s Concerns
PISTON national president Mody Floranda stated the strike is a protest against the government’s “inaction” and “US aggression,” which the group believes is contributing to hardship for Filipinos according to a press conference on March 16.
