Curaçao Celebrates World Down Syndrome Day with Fashion and Awareness

Curaçao marked World Down Syndrome Day, observed globally on March 21st, with a series of events focused on promoting acceptance, inclusion, and awareness of Down syndrome. Festivities culminated in a vibrant fashion show, the ‘Down Right Down Perfect Show’, held at Sambil Curaçao on Saturday, March 29th, 2026.

Promoting Inclusion Through Fashion

The ‘Down Right Down Perfect Show’, organized by the parent association Totolika, featured individuals with Down syndrome on the catwalk. Totolika is a community organization comprised of parents and supporters dedicated to advocating for equal opportunities and rights for people with intellectual disabilities. The fashion show aimed to demonstrate the unique value and perfection inherent in every individual, challenging societal norms and fostering a more inclusive environment. Sambil Curaçao highlighted the event as a celebration of confidence, talent, and acceptance.

Community-Wide Celebrations

The World Down Syndrome Day celebrations in Curaçao extended beyond the fashion show. On Friday, March 21st, the Children’s Museum Curaçao hosted a meeting with creative and educational activities designed for children, and families. Caribbean Cinemas Curacao also participated by supporting the Totolika Foundation and raising awareness through the sale of colored crazy socks, symbolizing that “every step matters.” Socks were available at the Totolika stand at the Sambil Market.

Totolika’s Commitment to Equality

Totolika’s efforts are part of a broader movement to advocate for the rights and inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The organization strives to create a society where people with Down syndrome are fully integrated and valued members of the community. Siloam Curacao noted that one of their children with Down syndrome was invited to the Sambil Curaçao event, themed “the upside of down syndrome,” expressing gratitude for such initiatives.
