A public dispute has unfolded between People Power Party (PPP) leader Jang Dong-hyuk and President Lee Jae-myung over the ownership of multiple properties by Jang, escalating tensions during the Lunar New Year holiday. The conflict began after President Lee questioned Jang’s holdings, prompting a response that involved Jang’s 95-year-old mother.
Jang Dong-hyuk’s Response and Family Concerns
Jang Dong-hyuk addressed the controversy on Facebook, stating that his mother was deeply worried after seeing President Lee’s post on X (formerly Twitter). He described his mother’s concern that her home could be affected, expressing frustration with the President’s actions. “Because of the president, the unfilial son weeps from the particularly start of the new year,” Jang wrote UPI.
According to property disclosures released in October by the National Assembly’s Public Officials Ethics Committee, Jang owns full or partial shares in six residential properties, including an apartment in Seoul’s Guro district and a detached house in Ungcheon-eup, Boryeong, where his mother resides UPI.
Democratic Party Criticism
The Democratic Party of Korea has intensified its criticism of Jang Dong-hyuk, with multiple lawmakers weighing in on the issue. Lawmaker Park Ji-won questioned Jang’s stance on multiple homeownership, even as others raised concerns about the implications of his property holdings UPI.
Democratic Party floor spokesperson Baek Seung-ah criticized Jang for appearing to create division, questioning why he responded to the President’s comments in a way that highlighted personal concerns. Background on Jang Dong-hyuk’s Leadership
Jang Dong-hyuk was elected as the new leader of the People Power Party in August 2025, defeating Kim Moon-soo in a runoff vote Chosun Biz.
