Congo launched its vaccination campaign against the Ebola virus disease on Thursday in Kisangani, deploying the Ervebo vaccine to protect frontline health workers amid the fastest-growing outbreak of the disease in history, according to the Associated Press. Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare Dr. Samuel-Roger Kamba initiated the rollout in the capital of Tshopo province, prioritizing medical personnel and response workers who face extreme operating conditions marked by regional insecurity, population displacement, and a concurrent health workers’ strike.
Vaccine Deployment and Clinical Trials
Health authorities have secured more than 50,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine, according to Congo’s state news agency, while the World Health Organization reported a total approval of 70,000 doses for the nation. Approximately 20,000 of those doses are designated for a clinical trial to evaluate whether the vaccine offers protection against the Bundibugyo virus strain, which is driving the current epidemic, according to AP News. The outbreak involves a virus strain that currently lacks a licensed vaccine or specific antiviral treatment.
Administered under a compassionate-use program, the Ervebo vaccine has a proven track record against a different, more common type of Ebola from past outbreaks. Placide Mbala Kingebeni, Africa CDC’s director for research, clinical trials and innovation, stated that data will be collected throughout the vaccination campaign to measure efficacy against the current viral strain, according to AP News. Health officials noted that while related viruses share biological characteristics, actual clinical prevention levels for the Bundibugyo strain remain under formal study.
Outbreak Scale and Operational Challenges
Government figures cited by AP News show that the country has recorded 5,713 confirmed cases and 2,744 deaths. The epidemic is concentrated primarily in Ituri province and spans six eastern provinces total, encompassing 14 targeted health zones across Tshopo, Bas-Uele, and Haut-Uele. The World Health Organization has warned that the trajectory of the outbreak threatens to surpass the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, which remains the deadliest on record with over 11,000 fatalities primarily distributed across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.
Dr. Samuel-Roger Kamba strongly encouraged health workers to accept the vaccine, emphasizing that immunization protects individual personnel and stops them from carrying the virus back into local communities. The campaign covers high-risk operational zones where logistical barriers and ongoing population movements continue to complicate containment efforts by international and domestic health agencies.
