Farmacias Similares, Mexico’s largest pharmacy chain, is rapidly expanding its reach beyond Latin America, bringing its signature low-cost medications and beloved mascot, Dr. Simi, to markets including the United States and Japan. This expansion is driven by a strategy to offer affordable healthcare options and capitalize on the growing popularity of the Dr. Simi character.
First Flagship Store in the United States
In September 2025, Farmacias Similares opened its first flagship store outside of Mexico in the heart of Hollywood, California, located at 6818 Hollywood Boulevard. This “Similandia” location has quickly become a tourist destination, offering interactive attractions, official merchandise like the popular Simi plushies, and branded products including food supplements and cosmetics. The pharmacy aims to provide medications “the same but cheaper,” as its slogan states.
Strategic Alliance with CVS Pharmacy
To further penetrate the U.S. Market, Farmacias Similares has formed an alliance with CVS Pharmacy. This collaboration will allow select Dr. Simi products to be sold in some branches of the American pharmacy chain, increasing accessibility for U.S. Consumers.
Dr. Simi’s Hollywood Moment
The Dr. Simi mascot has gained significant traction in Hollywood, boosted by its proximity to the Dolby Theatre, where the Academy Awards are held. Farmacias Similares strategically included exclusive versions of the Simi plushie and food supplements, such as vitamins, in the “Everyone Wins Nominee Gift Bag” at the 98th Academy Awards, valued at approximately $320,000. This move has significantly raised the brand’s profile among celebrities and a wider audience.
Expansion into Japan
Farmacias Similares is also setting its sights on the Japanese market. Even as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations currently prevent the marketing of its pharmaceutical products in Japan, the company is focusing on establishing its brand presence through its flagship characters. CEO Victor González Herrera noted the cultural resonance of the Dr. Simi mascot in Japan, citing an example of a Japanese flight attendant who carries a Dr. Simi plushie as a symbol of “love, peace and empathy.”
