Masako Nozawa Condemns Unauthorized AI Voice Cloning as Theft

Masako Nozawa, the 89-year-old Japanese voice actor renowned for voicing Goku in the Dragon Ball series, has spoken out publicly against artificial intelligence-generated videos that replicate her voice without permission. Speaking to Japanese broadcaster NHK, Nozawa denounced the practice as “unforgivable” and compared it directly to theft, marking her first public address on the issue.

The controversy surrounds unauthorized AI models trained on Nozawa’s vocal performances to generate new audio. Nozawa stated that she remained unaware until recently that her voice was utilized in AI projects. She emphasized that her voice and acting belong strictly to her, demanding that creators follow proper rules and secure explicit consent before using even small portions of her work.

Japan Actors Union Responds With New Guidelines

The rise of unauthorized voice impersonation has triggered broader industry responses across Japan. The Japan Actors Union, representing approximately 2,600 members including voice actors, announced its first official set of guidelines regarding AI voice usage.

The newly established framework mandates that performers or their respective agencies grant prior consent before any human voice is utilized in AI-generated video projects. Furthermore, the guidelines dictate that when developers train AI models using the voices of deceased individuals, the technology must strictly respect the person’s wishes expressed during their lifetime and secure formal permission from their family or other relevant parties.

The Lack of Emotional Authenticity in Synthetic Voices

Addressing the technical capabilities of synthetic audio, Nozawa argued that machine-generated replicas fundamentally lack genuine human emotion. While acknowledging that algorithms might produce a technically accurate acoustic copy, she maintained that the output remains hollow.

“It might even be a perfect copy. But it has no heart, does it? Without heart, it’s no good, whatever the role,” Nozawa told NHK, highlighting that authentic vocal performance relies on real emotional depth rather than digital replication.
