Drake University Names Natalie Bayer Interim Dean of Arts & Sciences
Drake University has appointed Professor Natalie Bayer as the interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, effective July 1, 2026, for a one-year term. She will succeed Dean Gesine Gerhard, who is stepping down after eight years of service .
A Seasoned Administrator and Professor
Bayer is a professor of history at Drake University and has been a member of the faculty since 2010, beginning as an assistant professor . She also previously served as the assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and as associate dean for student affairs . Provost Sue Mattison highlighted Bayer’s “deep and steady commitment to student, staff, and faculty success” and her “thoughtful leadership” .
Transition and Search for a Permanent Dean
Gerhard’s departure after eight years will be followed by a national search for a permanent dean, conducted during Bayer’s one-year term . Mattison praised Gerhard’s contributions to the university, noting her advocacy for diversity initiatives, effective fundraising, transnational educational programs, and renovations to the Fine Arts Center .

Bayer expressed her honor and humility in stepping into the role of interim dean, acknowledging the significant legacy left by Gerhard . She emphasized the importance of student voices and experiences, stating, “Your education, your voices, and your experiences matter deeply to me” .
