An ongoing outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has expanded rapidly since it was first reported on May 15, according to data from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). As of August 15, the outbreak reached 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 deaths, prompting health officials to warn that the crisis risks becoming the largest Ebola epidemic in the country’s history.
Outbreak Scale and Comparisons to Prior Epidemics
Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya warned that current transmission trends could surpass the devastating West Africa Ebola epidemic of 2013, which originated in Guinea and resulted in more than 28,000 infections and over 11,000 deaths. The current DRC outbreak marks the largest scale recorded for the Bundibugyo strain in the region, driven by fast-moving transmission dynamics in eastern provinces.
Response Challenges and Humanitarian Obstacles
Public health containment efforts face severe obstacles in the Ituri and North Kivu regions, where ongoing armed conflict and large-scale population displacement have degraded local infrastructure. According to health authorities, contact-tracing rates sit at approximately 12%, falling far short of the critical 95% target required to halt transmission. Furthermore, roughly 850 confirmed patients remain unaccounted for in treatment, survival, or mortality tracking systems, heightening the risk of undetected community spread. Deep-seated community distrust has delayed patient admissions, while traditional burial practices involving direct contact with bodies and home-based care without protective equipment continue to fuel transmission.
Funding Shortfalls and Medical Interventions
Financial constraints remain a primary bottleneck for containment operations. Meanwhile, local testing capacity has been established in Ituri, and clinical trials for two vaccines targeting the Bundibugyo strain, along with new therapeutics and prophylactics, have commenced. Researchers are also evaluating the Ervebo vaccine to test its potential for cross-protection in lowering overall mortality rates.

The WHO emphasizes that active community case-finding strategies—deploying teams to search for patients village by village—combined with the accelerated delivery of medical countermeasures represent the most viable path to suppressing transmission. With a case fatality rate of 47% and a documented risk of international spread to neighboring countries, public health agencies identify the upcoming 100 days as the critical window to avert a catastrophic escalation of the epidemic.
