Drone Strike Damages Train in Sumy Region of Ukraine

A drone strike on a train traveling to Sumy in northeastern Ukraine on the morning of March 8, 2026, caused damage to the locomotive but resulted in no casualties among the up to 200 passengers on board. The incident occurred in the Sumy district, according to the Sumy regional prosecutor’s office.

The prosecutor’s office identified the drone used in the attack as a “Lancet” type. Passengers were transferred to their final destination using another locomotive UNN.

This attack is the latest in a series of incidents targeting Ukraine’s railway infrastructure. On the same day, ATEsh partisans reported destroying an electric locomotive in Russia’s Bryansk region, despite heightened security measures UNN.

Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) has been forced to adjust train schedules due to ongoing damage to railway infrastructure in several regions, including Rivne, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr, caused by overnight attacks. Diesel locomotives are being deployed to maintain movement in areas where power has been disrupted UNN.
