Dubai World Cup 2026: A Legacy of Champions and a Race Against Time

Saturday, March 28, 2026, marks the 30th running of the Dubai World Cup, sponsored by Emirates Airline. Since its inception in 1996, the race has been a cornerstone of Thoroughbred racing, initially boasting the highest purse in the sport before being surpassed by the $20 million Saudi Cup. Dubai Racing Club continues to lead the event.

Despite rising regional conflicts and recent missile strikes near Dubai, including incidents at Meydan Racecourse and Dubai International Airport, preparations for the 2026 Dubai World Cup are proceeding as planned. Racing officials confirmed the event will continue, with security measures in place.

This year’s competition features defending World Cup winner Hit Show, Breeders’ Cup Sprint champion Bentornato and Clark Stakes winner Magnitude, who arrived in Dubai on a flight from Miami. Forever Young has been in Dubai since mid-February, aiming to improve upon his third-place finish in the 2025 race.

A Look Back at Dubai World Cup Greats

5. Invasor (2007)

Invasor, an underrated champion, achieved 11 wins in 12 career starts. After dominating in Uruguay, he transitioned to the U.S., winning races like the Whitney Handicap and the Breeders’ Cup Classic. He returned to Dubai to win the 2007 World Cup in a time of 1:59.97 over 2,000 meters, earning a place in the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 2013.

4. Arrogate (2017)

Arrogate’s 2017 Dubai World Cup victory is considered one of his most impressive performances, following a six-race winning streak that included the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Pegasus World Cup. He overcame a slow start to win by 2 ¼ lengths, a performance that trainer Bob Baffert deemed “super impressive.” Arrogate was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2023, but tragically died shortly after beginning his stud career.

3. California Chrome (2016)

California Chrome, a fan favorite, finished second in the 2015 Dubai World Cup before returning in 2016 to win by 3 ¾ lengths. His 2016 campaign included wins at Santa Anita Park and a dominant performance in Dubai, leading to his selection as 2016 Horse of the Year and induction into the Hall of Fame in 2023.

2. Curlin (2008)

Curlin excelled at the 1 ¼ mile distance, winning five of seven starts at that length. His 2008 Dubai World Cup victory was particularly dominant, winning by 7 ¾ lengths at Nad al Sheba. A two-time Horse of the Year (2007 and 2008), Curlin has become a successful sire and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2014.

1. Cigar (1996)

Cigar, riding a 13-race winning streak, won the inaugural 1996 Dubai World Cup by a half-length against Soul of the Matter. Despite a foot bruise that threatened his participation, Cigar demonstrated his resilience and secured a historic victory. He continued to race successfully after Dubai, eventually being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002.
