‘Dune: Part Three’ Promises a Darker Tone and Explosive Conflict
The first trailer for Dune: Part Three has been unveiled, offering a glimpse into the concluding chapter of Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed sci-fi saga. The film, based on Frank Herbert’s Dune: Messiah, premiered to journalists, critics, and creators in Los Angeles on March 17, 2026, with key cast members and Villeneuve present to discuss the upcoming installment.
A Time Jump and Shifting Tone
Dune: Part Three is set 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two. Villeneuve described the film as having a different tone and pace than its predecessors, moving from the contemplative exploration of the first film and the war-focused second to a more action-packed and tense narrative. He emphasized that the film explores the consequences of Paul Atreides’ power and his struggle to break a cycle of violence.
The Core Relationship Remains
Despite the heightened intensity, the relationship between Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and Chani (Zendaya) remains central to the story. Villeneuve stated their love story is the “heartbeat” of the film, as Paul navigates the burdens of leadership and the pressures of his position.
Modern and Returning Faces
The cast includes returning stars Zendaya, Javier Bardem, and Jason Momoa. New additions to the cast include Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Paul’s sister, and Robert Pattinson as Scytale, a character Pattinson described as “unusual” and whose allegiances are ambiguous. Florence Pugh also joins the cast as Princess Irulan.
Plot Hints from the Trailer
The trailer opens with a scene of Paul and Chani discussing potential names for their children, referencing Leto and Ghanima – foreshadowing significant events for fans of the novels. The footage also showcases Paul grappling with the responsibilities of being emperor and the challenges of seeing the future, as well as glimpses of galactic conflict and the return of Duncan Idaho (Momoa).
Villeneuve’s Personal Connection
Villeneuve revealed that Dune: Messiah is his favorite book in the series and that adapting it into a film is a deeply personal project. He highlighted the film’s exploration of power, relationships, and the struggle to escape cycles of violence.

Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, with Jacqueline West handling costume design, Patrice Vermette as production designer, and Joe Walker as editor. Linus Sandgren takes over cinematography duties from Greig Fraser, utilizing both 65mm film and Imax film for a visually stunning experience. Villeneuve emphasized that the film is intended to be seen on the largest screen possible.
