Ski racer Lena Dürr goes into the final of the Olympic giant slalom with surprisingly good chances of winning a medal. After the first run in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the 34-year-old is in second place, just 0.34 seconds behind the leading Italian Federica Brignone. Her teammate Sofia Goggia is third, 0.12 seconds behind Dürr. Dürr is 0.40 seconds ahead of fourth place – which is shared by three athletes.
The second German starter, Emma Aicher, was in 17th place (+1.25) after 30 starters. The second race starts at 1.30 p.m. (ZDF and Eurosport).
“It was so fun, oh man,” said Dürr. «I’m standing up there, the sun is shining and everything is arranged. The fact that it was so successful… it was simply a joyous ride. That was really wonderful, it was fun.”
Late satisfaction after slalom disappointment in 2022?
Dürr is actually a slalom specialist, but has also improved significantly in giant slalom this season. If she actually makes it into the medal ranks in the Dolomites, it would be a belated satisfaction for her after the disappointment at the 2022 Olympics: In Beijing she went into the final as the leader in the slalom, but ended up just finishing fourth.
