Dustin Poirier Explains the Life-Changing Impact of Knocking Out Conor McGregor

Dustin Poirier has often reflected on the most significant win of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. Poirier famously lost to Conor McGregor by knockout in the first round when they first fought in 2014. However, seven years later, at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi on January 24, 2021, Poirier secured a stunning second-round TKO victory, avenging his previous defeat.[1][2][3]

The Turning Point: UFC 257

Prior to facing McGregor in their rematch, Poirier had already established himself as an elite fighter within the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). He had competed in title fights, headlined pay-per-view events, and garnered a substantial fan base. However, Poirier emphasizes that defeating McGregor was the catalyst that truly elevated his status as a UFC superstar.

“I fought 19 years, that Conor fight, that’s when things changed for me recognition-wise,” Poirier stated during an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience. “The door opened for seminars, for appearances. That changed [everything].“I had been in so many UFC main events. I had fought for the belt and done all this stuff, but that guy’s name, man.”[3]

Poirier’s Retirement and Reflections

Dustin Poirier announced his retirement from MMA after a loss to Max Holloway at UFC 318 in July 2025. The now-retired lightweight explained his decision, citing concerns about his physical abilities as he aged.[3]

“I was scared about fighting for too long,” Poirier told Joe Rogan. “I retired at 36. How much more athletic am I going to secure? How much faster am I gonna get? “Power is the last thing to go, but durability, speed, reaction time, everything that I necessitate [declines with age]. And if I’m not right in line for a title shot, what am I doing? I’m fighting just to fight, or for a paycheck. “I had to glance myself in the mirror, like, ‘Okay, this is it. I’m gonna be healthy.’ I left with my faculties, for the most part.”[3]

UFC 257 Details

UFC 257, held at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, saw approximately 2,600 fans in attendance. The event generated a buyrate of 1,504,737.[2] The main card featured several notable fights, including Dan Hooker vs. Michael Chandler, and Jessica Eye vs. Joanne Wood.[1]

In the main event, Poirier defeated McGregor by TKO at 2:32 of the second round, marking the first knockout or technical knockout loss in McGregor’s 13-year MMA career.[3] Poirier initially targeted McGregor’s leg with calf kicks, compromising his mobility before unleashing a series of punches that led to the finish.[3]
