Dutch Gas Reserves Plummet to Lowest Level in Ten Years

The Netherlands’ natural gas reserves have fallen to a concerning low of 5.8%, marking the lowest filling level in a decade, according to the National Energy Dashboard operated by Gasunie. This decline raises questions about supply security as the country prepares to replenish its stocks in the spring.

Factors Contributing to the Depletion

The significant decrease in gas reserves is primarily attributed to increased consumption during the winter heating season. Gas is stored in underground facilities located in Norg, Grijsperk, Alkmaar, Bergermeer, and Zuidwending. The largest reserve, in Norg, is currently almost empty, with reserves in Alkmaar and Grijsperk filled to less than 1%.

Gasunie’s Assessment and Outlook

Despite the low levels, Gasunie maintains that gas supply to the Netherlands remains stable. A spokesperson for the company stated that they are closely monitoring gas flows and anticipate the filling season to initiate shortly as winter wanes. The previous low was recorded on March 30, 2018, at 6.19%. Between 2016 and 2025, reserves averaged slightly less than one-third full on March 25.

Geopolitical Impacts on Replenishment

Replenishing gas reserves this year is expected to be more challenging and costly due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. The blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, in response to attacks by the United States and Israel, is causing global concerns about liquefied natural gas (LNG) availability. While the Netherlands is not heavily reliant on gas from the Middle East, the disruption is increasing competition for alternative gas sources.

Gasunie’s Call for Strategic Reserves

In a separate development, Gasunie has urged the Dutch government to establish a strategic gas reserve to safeguard against prolonged supply disruptions. This recommendation underscores the growing recognition of the necessitate for enhanced energy security in the face of global uncertainties.

Gasunie’s Role and Financial Information

Gasunie operates as an energy network operator in the Netherlands and northern Germany, managing the infrastructure for large-scale gas transport and storage. All shares in N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie are held by the State of the Netherlands, represented by the Ministry of Finance. Starting in March 2026, Gasunie will publish investor updates twice a year, providing financial results, project developments, and market information.

Dutch TTF Natural Gas Futures
