Rotterdam Mayor to Abseil Euromast After Record Election Turnout
Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten will abseil down the city’s Euromast tower after voter turnout in Wednesday’s municipal elections surpassed 38.9%, the lowest recorded in the country in 2022. The pledge, made by Schouten in a video shared on Instagram from the 185-meter landmark, was a bid to encourage greater participation in the local elections. A Promise Driven by Low Turnout
In the 2022 municipal elections, Rotterdam experienced the lowest voter turnout in the Netherlands, at just 38.9%. Schouten’s challenge aimed to reverse this trend, stating, “If you want to see me dangling here in the coming period, make sure you vote on March 18.”
Turnout Exceeds Target
The gamble paid off. According to Rijnmond.nl, the final turnout reached 40.7%, triggering the mayor’s commitment. The news has been met with both excitement and amusement, with Miniworld Rotterdam already creating a miniature version of Schouten abseiling from a scaled-down Euromast. Renovations Delay the Descent
While the mayor is prepared to face her fear, the actual abseiling event is likely to take place in May. This delay is due to ongoing renovations at the Euromast tower, which is currently being handled by Sky-Access.
Jetten’s Pledge and National Turnout
Schouten isn’t the only politician facing a public challenge. Prime Minister Rob Jetten also pledged to abseil if the national voter turnout exceeded the previous election’s figures. DutchNews.nl reports that national turnout did increase to 53.7% from 51% in 2022, meaning Jetten will also be fulfilling his promise.
