Ruud de Wild Steps Away From Radio Reveal Amidst Death Threats

Dutch radio presenter Ruud de Wild temporarily left his show on NPO Radio 2 after receiving death threats following a controversial interview. The threats stemmed from a discussion about stereotypes surrounding Chinese Dutch people, sparking widespread criticism and a formal complaint.

The Controversial Interview

The interview, conducted with documentary filmmaker Julie Ng, centered around her documentary “Meer dan Babi Pangang” (More than Babi Pangang), which explores the cultural identity of Chinese-Dutch individuals. The conversation, initially presented as ‘China Journaal’ with Chinese music, quickly devolved into jokes about Chinese food, specifically loempia’s (spring rolls), sugar content, and the color of babi pangang sauce.

Co-host Lauren Verster questioned the “dubiousness” of the sauce’s fluorescent color and its sugar content, prompting criticism that the interview reduced a complex cultural exploration to stereotypes. Ng expressed her disappointment, stating the discussion failed to address the documentary’s broader themes of cultural adaptation and identity.

Apology and Complaint

Following the backlash, Ruud de Wild and Lauren Verster apologized for the insensitive nature of the interview. Although, Ng filed a formal complaint with the NPO, alleging racism and the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes.

Death Threats and Departure

Three weeks after the interview, De Wild announced on air that he had received a “wave of threats,” including wishes for his death and the death of his mother. He stated the threats escalated when his children became involved, leading him to walk off the air. He declared, “Enough is enough.” De Wild will not be on air for the remainder of the week, according to his employer, PowNed.
