Duterte Faces ICC Scrutiny: AMA with Expert Ross Tugade on March 11th

MANILA, Philippines – Wednesday, March 11th, marks one year since the historic arrest and detention of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, in March 2025. Duterte is facing charges of crimes against humanity related to the “Davao Death Squad” during his time as mayor of Davao City and the subsequent “war on drugs” implemented during his presidency.

ICC Pre-Trial Hearings Concluded

The ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I concluded hearings on the confirmation of charges last month, on February 27, 2026 . The Chamber will soon issue a decision determining whether the case will proceed to trial. The hearings took place from February 23rd, 24th, 26th and 27th, from 5 pm to 10 pm Manila time .

Human rights groups estimate that nearly 30,000 people were killed during Duterte’s war on drugs . The ICC is investigating three counts of crimes against humanity: murder and attempted murder.
