French E-commerce Investment Priorities for 2026: Cybersecurity, Marketing and the Rise of AI

French e-commerce businesses are prioritizing investments in cybersecurity and marketing as they navigate economic uncertainties, international competition, and rapid technological advancements, according to a recent study by Fevad, the French Federation of E-commerce and Distance Selling. The findings, based on a survey of 113 e-commerce leaders, reveal a strategic focus on consolidating fundamental e-commerce models while embracing emerging technologies like generative AI.

Cybersecurity and Marketing Lead Investment

A significant 58% of French companies plan to increase their budgets for information technology and cybersecurity in 2026. This is followed closely by marketing and advertising, with 48% of businesses allocating increased resources to these areas. Further investment is directed towards international development and audience monetization strategies, including marketplaces and retail media.

Within marketing budgets, social media, search engine optimization (SEO), and online advertising are receiving the most attention. Investment in traditional offline channels – television, radio, print media – remains stable or is declining.

Generative AI as a Key Transformation Driver

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI, is rapidly becoming a major driver of transformation in the French e-commerce sector. An impressive 94% of French companies report using at least one generative AI solution. This technology is viewed as the most promising innovation over the next three years, with applications in customer relations, marketing, logistics, and security.

The adoption of generative AI is also driving organizational changes. 87% of leaders report observing evolutions in their organizational structures linked to the implementation of AI solutions.

Impact of Asian E-commerce Platforms

The rise of Asian e-commerce platforms like Shein, Temu, and AliExpress is significantly impacting the French market. 70% of French e-commerce businesses exposed to competition from these platforms report a direct impact on their activities, and nearly one-third have had to adapt their commercial strategies in response.

Shifting Consumer Behavior

Alongside these trends, significant shifts in consumer behavior are being observed. 93% of leaders note a strengthening of consumer interest in promotions and low prices. 95% believe that consumer price benchmarks have changed, and 80% observe an increase in impulse purchases.

Looking Ahead

The French e-commerce landscape in 2026 is shaping up to be one of strategic investment, technological adaptation, and heightened competition. Businesses are focused on strengthening their core capabilities while embracing the potential of AI and responding to evolving consumer expectations and the challenges posed by international players. Continued monitoring of these trends will be crucial for success in this dynamic market.
