Tvitec Secures €120 Million Loan for Spain’s First Large Float Glass Furnace
After nearly five years of anticipation, a significant milestone has been reached in the reindustrialization of the El Bierzo region of Spain. The Spanish Government has approved a €120 million institutional loan, backed by a state guarantee, to support the construction of Tvitec System Glass’s new float glass furnace.
Project Details and Investment
The loan represents 64 percent of the total planned investment of €185 million for the glass production plant in Cubillos del Sil. The project aims to establish a sustainable and circular float furnace, the first of its kind in Spain, and Europe. This will enable Tvitec to produce glass currently processed by the company domestically, rather than relying on external sources.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
Tvitec forecasts a production capacity of up to 850 tons of glass per day. Perhaps more importantly, the project is expected to generate up to 1,000 new jobs, both directly and indirectly, providing a significant boost to the local economy as part of a just transition away from coal mining and coal-fired power plants in El Bierzo (León). This initiative supports a broader reindustrialization and just transition project for the region, championed by Teresa Ribera, Vice-President of the Government and Minister for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and Reyes Maroto, Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism.
Next Steps and Project Timeline
With the loan secured, Tvitec will now finalize project documentation, obtain the necessary licenses and permits, and establish a firm timeline for the launch of the glass blast furnace project. The facility will be located in the Bayo industrial estate, where Tvitec already has land reserved. Executives from Tvitec, including Javier Prado and Alberto Fernández Sutil, are scheduled to provide further details about the project in a forthcoming announcement.
Strategic Partnerships and Energy Transition
This project is part of a wider effort to transition the El Bierzo region towards sustainable industries. Endesa is also involved in related projects, including an energy alliance with Tvitec to develop the glass blast furnace, and the demolition of facilities at the Compostilla thermal power plant as part of its energy transition initiatives. The new furnace will utilize the latest energy technologies and green hydrogen as part of its commitment to sustainability.
Tvitec System Glass is a leading high-performance glass manufacturer in Europe according to the company website, offering comprehensive glass production systems.
