Kampnagel Receives 168 Million Euros For Major Renovation And Expansion in Hamburg

Kampnagel, the former machinery factory in Hamburg operating as an international cultural center since 1982, is undergoing a 168 million euro general renovation and expansion project. The funding is split between 60 million euros from the federal budget and the remaining balance from the Hamburg state budget, with the municipal company Sprinkenhof GmbH executing the construction over a three-year timeline.

French Architects Design Sustainable Transformation For Industrial Monument

The architectural concept was developed by the French firm Lacaton & Vassal, recipients of the 2021 Pritzker Architecture Prize. Rather than pursuing demolition and new construction, the architects plan to transform and expand the mid-19th-century industrial ironworks to preserve resources. Kampnagel artistic director Amelie Deuflhard, who has held the post since 2007, describes the site as a dual monument honoring both industrial heritage and the theatrical takeover of an industrial space.

Performative Construction Keeps Cultural Operations Running During Three-Year Build

Cultural programming will continue across unconstructed areas as a performative construction site while events also disperse to venues throughout Hamburg. Commercial director Jonas Zipf characterizes the approach as an operation on open heart surgery utilizing local anesthesia. The site currently hosts roughly 900 events and attracts up to 200,000 visitors annually, a schedule the venue intends to maintain.

Modernized Foyers, Variable Seating, and Ancient Cooling Systems

The overhaul encompasses several structural upgrades across the facility. The main foyer will absorb the ticket counter, while the former Peacetanbul restaurant space transforms into a bar-café operation. A new 110-seat restaurant operated by the same group will occupy the completely gutted former ticket area. The adjacent Alabama Cinema will integrate more closely into the main building by moving its box office to the new foyer, clearing space for a second screening room inside the cinema.

In hall K6, the wooden spectator stands—noted for trapping summer heat—will make way for an 850-seat retractable telescopic tribune to allow variable configurations. The venue will forgo traditional air conditioning in favor of an antique-inspired climate buffer zone designed to keep temperatures down during the International Summer Festival. Meanwhile, smaller hall K1 will transition into a flexible open space with its roof windows uncovered.

New Construction Adds Seven Thousand Square Meters of Space

Expansion plans introduce 7,000 square meters of additional area. A large new building designated as K7 will rise above the current foyer to house rehearsal rooms, workshops, training facilities, and an accessible public roof terrace. Additionally, a residential building with 26 rooms will provide accommodations for international artists working on site, reconnecting the former crane-shipping industrial harbor location with contemporary cultural production.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Kampnagel Redevelopment Project

Who is funding the 168 million euro renovation of Kampnagel?

The project is financed jointly by the German federal government, which contributed 60 million euros, and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, which covers the remaining costs from its state budget.

How will the construction affect current performances and visitor access?

Performances will continue on site in unaffected areas as a performative construction site, while other events are distributed to venues across Hamburg so that audiences do not lose access to dance, theater, and performance during the three-year timeline.

What changes are planned for the Alabama Cinema during the renovation?

The Alabama Cinema box office will relocate to the main Kampnagel foyer, freeing up space within the cinema itself to construct a second screening room.
