Electronic Arts Restructuring Cuts 400 Jobs and Closes BioWare

Electronic Arts is eliminating approximately 3% of its global workforce, cutting roughly 400 positions and shutting down its legendary Edmonton, Canada-based studio BioWare. The restructuring marks the video game giant’s first major operational overhaul since completing a $55 billion private-equity acquisition last year led by Silver Lake, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and Jared Kushner’s Affinity Partners. On Wednesday, Electronic Arts notified employees in an email about the layoffs, which include about 50 positions at BioWare.

Studio Closure Ends Three Decades of Role-Playing Game History

The closure of BioWare brings an immediate end to early development on the next Mass Effect project, according to a studio announcement shared on social media. Founded in 1995 in Edmonton, Alberta, BioWare joined the Electronic Arts portfolio through a 2007 acquisition before launching franchises that defined the modern role-playing genre. At the time of that purchase, Electronic Arts’ then-CEO, John Riccitiello, called BioWare one of the most respected studios in the industry that would make a strong contribution to our strategic growth initiatives on quality, online gaming and developing new intellectual properties. BioWare announced that after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.

The studio’s catalog includes industry-shaping titles such as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem. Cam Weber, president and chief studios officer, and David Tinson, president and chief operating officer, acknowledged the magnitude of the decision in a memo to staff obtained by Variety, stating that BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the role-playing genre, and we do not take this decision lightly.

Private Equity Transition Drives Portfolio Realignment

The 400 job reductions affect about 50 employees at BioWare alongside staff across other corporate divisions, as Electronic Arts pivots toward live-service operations and high-margin franchises. Last year’s $55 billion all-cash buyout took the publisher private, removing public stockholders and shifting corporate strategy toward projects with immediate long-term growth potential. Industry analysts noted that private ownership typically brings aggressive studio rationalization, debt-servicing requirements, and intensified focus on microtransactions.

At the same time, Electronic Arts is funneling resources into alternative projects. Variety reported that the company remains committed to launching Marvel’s Iron Man and a forthcoming Star Wars Jedi title, alongside ongoing multi-player expansions for Apex Legends. Studio executives also pointed to the commercial success of Battlefield 6 as a blueprint for future shooter portfolio strategies that will leverage combined resources from the Respawn and DICE development teams, stating in their memo that We’re going to take those learnings, balance our resources, and leverage the technology to deliver a shooter portfolio that unlocks growth.
