Winter Storm Set to Impact Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Appalachia
A significant winter storm is forecast to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and hazardous conditions to a large swath of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Appalachian regions. Approximately 56 million people are under a winter warning, with around 15 million facing blizzard warnings, particularly in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
Storm Timeline and Expected Impacts
The storm is expected to develop on Sunday, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to the mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Appalachians. Cold rain will continue in parts of the Carolinas through the weekend. Conditions are anticipated to intensify rapidly off the mid-Atlantic coast Sunday night into Monday morning, potentially generating wind gusts exceeding 50 mph and bands of heavy snowfall from the mid-Atlantic to southern New England.
The most severe impacts are expected along the coast, where blizzard warnings are in effect from parts of Delaware to Connecticut. Snowfall is predicted to begin Sunday morning in New York City, intensifying throughout the afternoon and evening, with possible accumulation rates of up to two inches per hour during the early morning hours.
Further inland, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are expected to receive three to six inches of snow, primarily Sunday night. Snowfall is generally forecast to subside by Monday night, with bands of heavy snow moving along the Interstate 95 corridor from Washington, D.C., to Boston during the morning. These snowfalls will gradually diminish throughout the day, lingering into the late hours in some areas of Massachusetts and Maine. Whereas the snow will decrease, strong winds will persist across the Northeast.
Travel Disruptions and Safety Concerns
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has warned that snowfall will create travel on Monday morning “extremely dangerous,” urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel. “Don’t go out on the road unless absolutely necessary. If you can stay home, stay home,” Mamdani stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Amtrak has announced adjustments to some of its routes on Sunday and Monday “due to hazardous weather conditions.” Customers will be notified directly of any cancellations or adjustments.

This storm arrives shortly after a previous system caused widespread ice accumulation across much of the United States, contributing to at least 50 deaths, including more than 10 in New York City.
