Community members gathered in Indianapolis on Friday evening to honor eight-year-old Miracle Bryan with a candlelight vigil outside her former east-side home on South Bancroft Street. The gathering followed the arrest of the child’s mother, 43-year-old Karrie Bryan, in connection with the girl’s death.
Vigil Honors Eight-Year-Old Miracle Bryan
Mourners lit candles, released balloons, and placed flowers, stuffed animals, and a banner made by classmates at the memorial site near Emerson Avenue and Brookville Road. Maliki Mitchell, the victim’s brother, described his sister as an energetic, loving entertainer who frequently offered words of wisdom to adults. Mitchell stated that he helped raise the child—brushing her hair, giving her baths, changing diapers, and holding her when she cried. Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to the home at 7 a.m. Wednesday, where emergency medical personnel pronounced the child dead at 7:07 a.m. after finding her unconscious and unresponsive.
Court Documents Detail Police Investigation and Charges
While Indianapolis police initially arrested Karrie Bryan on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent, court documents filed Thursday show she faces updated charges including possession of methamphetamine, dealing, neglect of a dependent, and obstruction of justice. Online jail records indicated no formal charges had been filed by Friday evening. According to an interview by IMPD Detective Joshua Taylor, the mother stated she discovered her daughter at the end of the bed holding a can of dry shampoo and wondered if the child had ingested something. Investigators subsequently discovered a container holding two glass vials of methamphetamine underneath a pillow in the bedroom. Detective Taylor reported that the mother admitted she moved the drugs to that location and placed them under the pillow prior to police arrival because she feared her past legal history. She also acknowledged using the substance the previous day to maintain energy.
Investigation Status and Next Steps
The Marion County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the official cause or manner of death for Miracle Bryan. Authorities continue to examine evidence recovered from the scene as the investigation proceeds toward formal court filings.
