EastEnders actor Shane Richie received a six-month driving ban and a £500 fine after admitting to a speeding offense in Reigate, Surrey, while blaming aggressive pursuit by tabloid photographers for his driving speed. Court records show the 62-year-old actor, whose real name is Shane Roche, was penalized on September 23 at Guildford Magistrates’ Court following the March incident.
Court Penalties and Speeding Details
Magistrates ordered Richie to pay a total of £320 in costs and a surcharge alongside his £500 fine. Court documents reveal the actor was caught driving a Ford at 35mph along Reigate Hill on March 15. The stretch of road features a steep climb leading to and from the nearby M25 motorway junction, where the posted limit was exceeded.
Richie submitted a guilty plea in writing, handling the matter in private via the Single Justice Procedure. In a written note to the court, the soap star apologized for the infraction while addressing the circumstances surrounding his driving behavior that day.
Paparazzi Pressures and Personal Circumstances
In his statement to the magistrates, Richie asserted that relentless pursuit by the British tabloid press contributed to the speeding incident. He stated that photographers had pursued him daily from his workplace in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire—where he films sometimes six days a week—all the way to his home.
The actor pointed to intense media scrutiny surrounding his ongoing personal life as the primary catalyst for the daily harassment. “It’s no secret now that I’m going through a very public divorce and for the last several months the British press have suspected this and have been constantly baiting me and almost always looking for a reaction from me to sell their newspapers,” Richie wrote in his court submission.
Describing instances where photographers followed him into Reigate and to the supermarket, Richie maintained that the constant provocation was designed to provoke an angry outburst on camera. “This is not an excuse for going five miles over the limit, but just a reason why I may have sped up on that particular road,” he added.
Richie has played pub landlord Alfie Moon on the BBC soap opera EastEnders since 2002. Outside of his acting work, he finished fourth on the reality television series I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2020, has hosted a number of game shows, and appeared in pantomimes.
Pending Legal Proceedings
Beyond the Reigate speeding conviction, Richie faces a separate upcoming trial for an alleged drink-driving offense. The incident allegedly occurred on July 29 at a petrol station forecourt in Harlow, Essex. Police arrested the actor at the scene, where he is accused of providing a breath sample containing 65mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath, exceeding the legal driving limit of 35mcg.
Residing in Tadworth, Surrey, Richie appeared at Colchester Magistrates’ Court earlier in September to enter a not-guilty plea for the Harlow charge. A trial date for the alleged drink-driving offense is scheduled for November 17, 2027.
