Easter Weather Outlook: Mild Temperatures Expected Across Norway
As Easter approaches, Norwegians are wondering what the weather will hold for potential ski trips and outdoor activities. Current long-term forecasts suggest warmer-than-normal temperatures across much of the country, but the quality of skiing will depend heavily on conditions leading up to the holiday.
Temperature Forecasts
Meteorologists are cautious about making definitive predictions this far out, but current models indicate temperatures above normal for both Palm weekend and Easter week. In Oslo, temperatures could reach around 10 degrees Celsius, potentially even up to 15 degrees Celsius during Palm weekend. Similar temperatures are expected in several parts of Western Norway, even as Trondheim will likely be somewhat cooler. Tromsø, which has experienced its mildest start to March since 1959, is forecast to see temperatures between 0 and 5 degrees Celsius.
Precipitation Patterns
The amount of precipitation is more uncertain. Southern and eastern Norway may receive slightly more rainfall than usual, while northern Norway could experience a drier period.
Impact on Skiing Conditions
The weather *before* Easter will be crucial in determining skiing conditions. A low-pressure system is currently moving across the country, bringing wet conditions to southern Norway and precipitation to the north earlier in the week. The higher snow line, due to the milder temperatures, will impact lower-altitude ski areas.
Still, good skiing conditions are still expected in the high mountains of southern Norway, where temperatures will remain below freezing, ensuring snowfall. Lower elevations, such as Hemsedal and Hovden, may experience a mix of snow and rain.
Recent Mild Weather in Tromsø
Tromsø has had the second mildest start to March on record, surpassed only by March 1959. The coldest start to the month ever recorded in Tromsø was in 1998.
