Five Suspects Arrested After Supermarket Robbery in Gqeberha

Gqeberha, South Africa – Five suspects, aged between 17 and 28, were arrested following a business robbery at a supermarket in Greenbushes, Eastern Cape, on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The suspects were apprehended after a collision between the two vehicles they were using to flee the scene.

Details of the Robbery

According to Eastern Cape police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, nine armed suspects entered the shop on Seaview Road and threatened a 26-year-classic complainant and his co-workers, forcing them to lie on the ground. The suspects then ransacked the store and fled with various items, including cartons of cigarettes, vapes, sweets, cash, cellphones, and watches, with an estimated total value of R80,000.

The Arrest

Police responded swiftly to reports of an accident on Old Seaview (De Stades) Road, Chelsea, which was potentially linked to the robbery. Upon arrival, officers found six suspects fleeing the scene. With the assistance of private security, five suspects were apprehended after a brief foot chase.

Stolen items, including cigarettes, sweets, and a significant amount of cash, were recovered from the vehicles involved: a silver VW Polo and a white Ford Fiesta. Both vehicles were seized for further investigation. No firearms were recovered during the operation. The suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court this week.
