Euro Nations Cup: Cricket Ireland Pushes for New T20 Tournament with ECB Support

Cricket Ireland is actively pursuing the establishment of a new Twenty20 (T20) tournament, the “Euro Nations Cup,” aiming for a launch as early as 2027. The proposed competition seeks to emulate the success of the Asia Cup, bringing together European cricket nations in both men’s and women’s formats.

Growing Momentum for a European Cricket Championship

Discussions with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) began in September 2025, with the potential for England’s participation adding significant commercial value and broadcast appeal to the tournament. Whereas the ECB has previously been hesitant about similar proposals, recent strong performances by European teams – notably Italy and Scotland challenging England at the recent T20 World Cup – and encouragement from the International Cricket Council (ICC) have prompted a reevaluation.

Format and Participating Nations

The Euro Nations Cup is envisioned as a T20 competition, encompassing both men’s and women’s fixtures. Potential participating nations include England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and Italy. Cricket Ireland Chair Brian MacNeice believes the tournament is progressing from a “fanciful idea” to a realistic prospect, anticipating announcements regarding the format and details within the next few months.

ECB Considerations and Future Plans

While supportive in principle, the ECB acknowledges logistical challenges related to broadcasting rights and existing schedules. MacNeice noted that creating space for the tournament within future plans is under consideration. England has already secured qualification for the 2028 T20 World Cup, which could provide an opportunity to develop emerging players within the context of the new European tournament.

Ireland’s 2026 Home Fixtures

Alongside the pursuit of the Euro Nations Cup, Cricket Ireland has announced a robust schedule of home international fixtures for 2026. This includes two T20Is against India in June and a series against New Zealand in May. From August 5th to 14th, Ireland will host Afghanistan for five One Day International (ODI) matches. The women’s team will also participate in the fourth edition of the ICC Women’s Championship.

Recent England vs. Ireland T20 Series

England recently faced Ireland in a three-match T20 series in Malahide, Dublin. Phil Salt’s impressive performance of 89 powered England to victory in the first match, chasing a target of 197.
