Ecuador and Canada signed a bilateral free trade agreement in Ottawa that eliminates tariffs on 99.6% of Ecuador’s export offerings, according to an official announcement from Ecuador’s Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, and Investments. The accord follows 10 months of negotiations and aims to equalize trade conditions with regional competitors like Colombia and Peru once it officially enters into force.
Key Terms and Market Access for Ecuadorian Goods
Under the terms of the newly signed agreement, more than 600 Ecuadorian products will gain duty-free access to the Canadian market. According to the Ministry of Production, primary beneficiaries include agricultural producers, family farms, agribusinesses, and indigenous community enterprises seeking entry into a major global consumer market.
Key export items covered by the zero-tariff provision include:
- Bananas
- Cacao and its derivatives
- Shrimp
- Tropical fruits, frozen fruits, and vegetables
- Broccoli, asparagus, and palm hearts
- Quinoa
In addition to consumer goods, the pact facilitates improved access to Canadian raw materials, capital goods, and industrial inputs. Ministry officials stated that these provisions are designed to strengthen the overall productivity and competitiveness of Ecuadorian industry.
Protections for Sensitive Domestic Sectors
To safeguard domestic production, the trade agreement includes specific exclusions and protective mechanisms. According to government disclosures, 227 strategic agricultural products are shielded from immediate full exposure.

The framework also incorporates limited quotas for specific livestock goods to prevent adverse economic disruptions for local producers.
Structure and Scope of the Bilateral Pact
The comprehensive treaty spans 29 distinct chapters regulating a wide array of economic and social areas. According to the Ministry of Production, the text covers trade in goods and services, investments, electronic commerce, transparency, labor and environmental standards, gender equality, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), rights of indigenous peoples, and formal dispute resolution mechanisms.
The agreement marks an official milestone in bilateral relations between Quito and Ottawa, positioning both nations for long-term economic cooperation once the legislative ratification and implementation processes conclude.
