Eduardo Rubio: From Chilean Football to Directing a U.S. Soccer Academy

Eduardo Rubio, a former Chilean professional footballer and coach, has embarked on a new chapter in his career as the Director of Sonny G Academy in Austin, Texas. This move marks a significant shift for Rubio, who previously worked with Colo-Colo’s youth divisions and represented Chile on the international stage.

A Career Spanning Multiple Continents

Rubio’s playing career began with Universidad Católica in 2002, where he spent five years before moving to Mexico’s Cruz Azul in 2007. His time in Mexico was brief, leading to a loan spell back in Chile with Colo-Colo. He then spent a season with FC Basel in Switzerland, with the option of a permanent transfer according to Wikipedia. Further stints followed with Unión Española, Deportes La Serena, and Lota Schwager.

Throughout his career, Rubio also represented the Chilean national team, earning 14 caps and scoring three goals.

Transition to Coaching and New Opportunities in the U.S.

After retiring as a player, Rubio transitioned into coaching, earning his coaching license from INAF in 2017. He spent several years leading Colo-Colo’s youth categories, including the Under 20 team in 2021, and served as a caretaker manager for the first team.

Rubio’s expertise in youth development caught the attention of Sonny G Academy, leading to his appointment as Director. He describes his role as akin to a Technical Manager, overseeing the academy’s recruitment and training programs.

Growth of Soccer in the United States

Rubio expressed his enthusiasm for the growing popularity of soccer in the United States, noting the significant investment in developing the sport. He plans to initially focus on the academy for six months before his family joins him, facilitated by an H1B1 visa which allows for dependent visas for spouses and children under 21 as reported by Wikipedia.

“Here people are crazy about sports…the topic of football is extremely strong,” Rubio told AS, highlighting the passionate sports culture in the U.S.
