Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Edwin Díaz underwent right elbow surgery on April 22 to remove loose bodies from the joint, according to MLB.com. The procedure sidelined the three-time Reliever of the Year for the first half of the season, altering the late-inning plans for a Dodgers bullpen designed for deep October contention.

Surgery and Recovery Timeline

According to MLB.com, Edwin Díaz spoke to reporters on Monday following the procedure performed the previous Wednesday to remove loose bone and cartilage fragments from his pitching elbow. Díaz stated that he had managed the condition since signing professionally in 2012 without experiencing significant symptoms before the issue intensified during a series in Colorado.

According to MLB.com, the discomfort reached a critical point on April 19 against the Colorado Rockies, a game in which Díaz failed to record an out while allowing three runs on three hits. Following that outing, Díaz reported unusual arm fatigue and stiffness to the team’s medical staff, prompting an MRI that revealed the loose bodies. He underwent surgery on April 22 and returned to major league action on July 29.

Performance and Velocity Shifts

Prior to the surgery, Díaz posted a 10.50 ERA across seven appearances while converting four saves, accompanied by an atypical 2.33 WHIP. Statistically, his four-seam fastball velocity dropped from an average of 97.2 mph in the previous season to 96.2 mph, while his slider velocity remained steady at approximately 88.9 mph.

Across six relief appearances totaling 5.0 innings post-return, he surrendered five earned runs on eight hits with three walks and six strikeouts. Despite the initial struggles, Díaz recorded his sixth save of the season on August 10 by throwing a scoreless ninth inning against the Kansas City Royals.

Bullpen Adjustments for the Dodgers

The absence of Díaz forced Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts to lean on bullpen depth during the initial recovery months. According to MLB.com, the team relied heavily on right-hander Blake Treinen and left-handers Tanner Scott and Alex Vesia to anchor the late innings while awaiting reinforcements and managing the workload in the bullpen.

Díaz expressed optimism regarding his recovery, noting that post-surgery tests and movement indicated a return to a normal range of motion without structural damage to the ligament. The right-hander continues to work toward consistent high-leverage outings as the Dodgers progress through the second half of the Major League Baseball season.
