Indonesia to Lift One-Way Traffic System for Eid Homecoming as Peak Travel Subsides

Jakarta – Indonesian authorities are preparing to lift the national one-way traffic system implemented for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr homecoming (mudik) as the peak travel period has passed. The decision, expected to be finalized Saturday morning, hinges on continued low traffic volume on toll roads.

One-Way System Evaluation

Inspector General Agus Suryonugroho, Chief of the National Police Traffic Corps, stated on Friday that an evaluation will be conducted in collaboration with stakeholders, including the Minister of Transportation and Jasa Marga, the toll road operator. A final report will be submitted to the Chief of Police.

“Tomorrow we will evaluate and collaborate with stakeholders… Maybe we will cancel the one way homecoming flow. We will tell you the time later,” said Inspector General Agus as cited by inp.polri.go.id.

Peak Travel Period Concluded

The peak of the homecoming traffic occurred on Wednesday night, with approximately 270,000 vehicles traversing the roads. This represents a 4.26% increase compared to the peak travel volume during the 2025 Eid homecoming according to the Indonesian National Police.

Implementation Details

The one-way system was officially implemented on Wednesday (March 18th) on the Trans Java Toll Road, spanning from kilometer 70 of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road to kilometer 414 of the Kalikangkung toll road. The system was activated at 13:30 WIB.

Ongoing Safety Measures

Authorities continue to prioritize safety during the homecoming and return journeys. The Traffic Corps’ tagline for this year’s homecoming is “Safe Homecoming, Happy Family,” reflecting the emphasis on secure travel as reported by Antara News. Strategic, data-based measures have been prepared to anticipate congestion on key routes, including the Trans-Java Toll, the northern Java coast (Pantura) route, and Merak-Bakauheni ferry crossings.

Reverse Flow Preparations

The National Police have already begun preparations for the anticipated return flow of travelers. Strategies are in place to manage traffic on functional toll roads, including those in Sukabumi. The peak of the return flow is predicted to occur in two waves: March 25-26 and March 28-29 according to Voi.id.

During Operation Ketupat 2026, 2,746 posts have been activated to secure 185,608 objects, including mosques, prayer locations, shopping centers, terminals, stations, ports, airports, and tourist attractions.
