Eileen Mayers Passes Away at Age 94

Former Coronation Street actor Eileen Mayers has died at the age of 94. Mayers passed away on June 27, 2026, according to notices published in Equity magazine and The Times Births, Deaths and Marriages column in July.

A tribute published in the notices and reported by The Daily Record noted her extensive career. “She took her final curtain call after an acting career which began aged 15 at the Oldham Repertory Theatre,” the tribute stated. “Sheila Birtles in Coronation Street between 1960-63, she is now ‘resting’ for ever. God bless.”

Mayers Played Sheila Birtles in Early Episodes

Mayers made her debut on the long-running ITV soap in January 1961. She played factory worker Sheila Birtles, who shared a flat with Doreen Lostock, maintained a close friendship with Elsie Tanner, and briefly dated Jerry Booth.

The character soon became central to a controversial storyline that entered series folklore when Sheila developed feelings for Neil Crossley. After facing mistreatment and rejection from Neil, the character entered a severe state of depression. Producers initially filmed scenes where Sheila died by suicide after taking an overdose of pills. However, after viewers learned of the plot, executives reversed their decision to air the footage, and Sheila left Weatherfield in 1963. Decades later, in 2011, those original scenes finally broadcast as part of the documentary The Corrie Years.

Mayers Returned to the Soap Until 1974

Following her initial departure, Mayers returned to the soap intermittently across the next decade. Her character married Neil Crossley in 1966 during an extended run, and later gave birth to a son named Danny, whom she placed up for adoption. Her final appearance on the programme aired in October 1974.

Fans shared tributes on social media following confirmation of her death. One viewer posted on X, “Sad to read that actress Eileen Mayers died in June aged 94,” adding details of her intermittent appearances from her January 1961 debut through her final 1974 stint.
