Rising Violence Against Seniors in Sweden Sparks Concern

Recent survey data indicates a concerning rise in violence and violations against elderly individuals in Sweden, prompting calls for increased attention and protective measures. The findings highlight a growing insecurity among seniors, with a significant percentage reporting experiencing or witnessing abusive behavior.

Prevalence of Violence and Threats

According to a survey conducted in February 2026 by the pensioners’ organization SKPF Pensionärna, 70 percent of respondents believe that violence and violations against the elderly have become more common. 7.6 percent reported that they themselves, or someone close to them, had been subjected to violence, threats, or violations after the age of 60. The survey reached a sample of 10,000 members, with just over 2,500 participating.

Growing Insecurity and Vulnerability

“These are very worrying figures that should shake politicians and decision-makers,” says Liza by Paolo-Sandberg, union chairman of SKPF Pensionärnerna. “Our members testify to both their own vulnerability and a growing insecurity.”

Forms of Abuse and Trust in Care

Psychological violence is the most frequently reported form of abuse, affecting 27 percent of respondents, either directly or through someone they know. This is followed by physical and economic violence. A significant 41 percent of those surveyed expressed little or very little trust in elderly care services.

Vulnerability of Older Women

Liza di Paolo-Sandberg emphasized the particular vulnerability of older women. “Older women risk ending up in particularly vulnerable situations, while their needs are often overlooked. Society must take this very seriously,” she stated.

Call for Action

The SKPF Pensionärna survey underscores the urgent need for increased awareness, preventative measures, and improved support systems to protect seniors from violence and abuse. The organization is advocating for greater attention from policymakers and a commitment to addressing the growing insecurity faced by older adults in Sweden.
