Ireland’s EV Revolution: Sales Soar, MG S6 EV Challenges the Market
Ireland is experiencing a surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with sales figures indicating a potential shift where EVs may surpass combined petrol and diesel car sales this year. This growth is fueled by more affordable EV models entering the market, and increased competition among manufacturers.
EV Sales Surge in Early 2026
The latest data from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) reveals a robust start to the year for EV sales. In the first two months of 2026, 10,172 EVs were sold, representing a nearly 40% increase compared to the 7,433 EVs sold during the same period in 2025. [1] EVs now account for 20.5% of total car sales in Ireland.
In contrast, petrol car sales represent 21.8% of the market, whereas diesel sales have declined to 13.2%. [1] Ireland has already exceeded its target of 195,000 EVs on the road, with the total number now exceeding 200,000 and continuing to grow rapidly. [1]
Top-Selling EVs in Ireland
Currently, the Volkswagen ID4, Hyundai Inster, Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona, and Toyota BZ are the best-selling EV models in Ireland. [1] While Chinese manufacturers BYD and MG are not yet in the top five, they are experiencing significant growth and are expected to turn into more competitive as the market expands.
MG S6 EV: A New Contender
MG has rapidly expanded its presence in the Irish market, increasing its model range from three to nine in just five years, surpassing both Nissan and BYD in sales. [1] The company’s latest offering, the MG S6 EV, is poised to further intensify competition and benefit car buyers.
The MG S6 EV features a standard 77kWh battery, providing a claimed range of 530 kilometers. [1]
