Italian finswimmer Elettra Calanca finished the Mediterranean Games in Taranto with two individual medals, securing a gold in the 400-meter bi-fins and a silver in the 200-meter bi-fins, according to results from the competition. Representing Sweet Team Modena, the 2007-born athlete helped lead her club to a total of four medals alongside teammates Anna Leonardi and Valter Prampolini.
Elettra Calanca Secures Gold and Silver in Bi-Fins Events
In the 200-meter bi-fins final, Calanca claimed the silver medal with a time of 1:48.19. France’s Camille Julien took the gold in 1:45.63, while Albane Deage finished two hundredths of a second behind Calanca to take the bronze in 1:48.21. Calanca noted after the race that she had targeted a second-place finish to manage her pre-race nerves.
Following a 3:59.66 performance in the preliminary heats, Calanca dropped her time significantly in the 400-meter bi-fins final. She captured the gold medal in 3:51.50, finishing over eight seconds faster than her heat time. Fellow Italian Laura Franchin earned the silver in 3:53.17, and France’s Albane Deage took the bronze in 3:53.69.
Sweet Team Modena’s Historic Showing at Mediterranean Games
Taranto marked the historic debut of finswimming as an official discipline at the Mediterranean Games. The Italian team finished the competition with 16 total medals, consisting of six golds, eight silvers, and two bronzes.
Sweet Team Modena contributed four of those medals to the Italian delegation. Beyond Calanca’s gold and silver, Anna Leonardi won silver in the 200-meter surface event with a time of 1:31.57 and placed fourth in the 400-meter surface. Valter Prampolini tied with Paolo De Pasquale for the bronze medal in the men’s 400-meter bi-fins, both clocking in at 3:35.70, before Prampolini secured a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter bi-fins. Luca Tonelli served as the club’s coach and functioned as the Competition Manager for finswimming at the Games.
