Warren Endorses Porter in California Governor’s Race
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has endorsed former Representative Katie Porter in the race for California governor, bolstering Porter’s campaign as she seeks to replace Gavin Newsom. The endorsement came on Thursday, ahead of the California Democratic Party’s convention in San Francisco this weekend.
A Long-Standing Relationship
Warren highlighted Porter’s dedication to consumer protection and her assertive questioning of corporate leaders and Trump administration officials during her time in Congress, often utilizing visual aids like whiteboards. “From the moment Katie set foot in my consumer law class, I knew that she would be a warrior for working families,” Warren stated according to the Sacramento Bee.
The two politicians have a relationship spanning over two decades, with Warren even being the namesake of one of Porter’s children. Porter previously endorsed Warren during her 2020 presidential campaign, a move that caused some friction within California Democratic circles as then-Senator Kamala Harris was also a contender.
Porter’s Campaign and Recent Challenges
Porter, who served as a U.S. Representative from California from 2019 to 2025 as per her Wikipedia page, was initially considered a strong candidate. However, her campaign faced setbacks following the release of videos in October showing her scolding a reporter and using profanity towards an aide. Porter has since expressed remorse for her behavior.
Shared Values and Progressive Vision
Both Warren and Porter share a commitment to holding large corporations accountable and protecting consumers. Porter emphasized this shared ground, stating, “Senator Warren and I fought together in Congress to hold Sizeable Banks and giant corporations that cheat the American people accountable,” the Sacramento Bee reported. She pledged to be a governor “who is unbought, undeterred, and unwilling to continue the special interest status quo.”
Open Race for Governor
The endorsement arrives at a pivotal moment in the California gubernatorial race, as no clear frontrunner has emerged with Governor Gavin Newsom termed out of office. The California Democratic Party convention this weekend will be a key event for candidates seeking the party’s support.
